1 Overview

Modeling is at the heart of system design. Accurate actuator and sensor modeling is necessary for controller design and performance predictions. Correct noise modeling often defines the limitatons of the system performance.

2 Frequency Domain

Frequency domain modeling is done through the use of LTI objects in MATLAB. The system is typically perturbed by outside forces. Those forces are represented by a PSD. The PSD is then multiplied by the square of the system magnitude. These models can be difficult to conceptualize without the visuals provided by Simulink. They frequently allow for quick turn around and parameter explorations.

Frequency domain modeling is limited to modeling linear aspects of systems. Most systems nominally operate in a linear region.

3 Time Domain

Simulink is the standard for time domain modeling. Simulink allows common nonlinearities and digital effects to be easily modeled. Frequency domain models are limited to linear effects. Time domain models allow for nonlinear effects to be modeled but are usually slower. Turn around time for a Time Domian model in Simulink is typically longer than the turn around time for a Frequency Domain.

4 Use of Examples

Examples are often the best way to learn so there are a number of files which will overlap between the Examples category and this one.
